Interwoven Realms

A dialogue between reality and imagination- Through fibre, ceramics, paint and digital layers, Nanette and Yvonne invite you to wander between the real and the reimagined — where familiar CQ coastlines and landscapes dissolve into dreamlike possibilities. Each artwork offers a new way of seeing nature’s wonder — delicate, transformative, and deeply interconnected. Join us as we celebrate the beauty of what’s real… and what might be.

Y V O N N E E L T O N (MOLONEY-LAW)

My artworks, exhibited in “Interwoven Realms,” are an exploration of the Australian spirit, expressed through a dialogue between digital art and oil painting. Using layered imagery and vibrant colour, I seek to re-imagine the profound beauty of our landscapes and seascapes, drawing deep inspiration from the transformative majesty of Carnarvon Gorge and the Capricorn Coast.

As a multidisciplinary, award-winning artist, I craft poetic, figurative images that blend elements of the natural environment—water, life, flora, and fauna—to create a powerful connection with Australia’s unique culture and ecosystem. My technique evolves through the intense observation and application of organic textures, colour, and natural light. Working predominantly in oil painting and a distinctive multi-level printmaking technique, my process visually articulates the essential interconnectivity between nature, life, and culture. Ultimately, my art is a call to awareness, dedicated to the vital conversation surrounding ecological conservation and the science of our Australian environment.

NANETTE BALCHIN

Nanette explores a realm of possibilities: somewhere in the space between ‘being’ and ‘becoming’ where transformation of objects, sense of place, mindset or emotions can occur, and where she brings to life the endless possibilities for things to change, be reimagined orencountered anew. She evokes a sense of wonder and mystery.

For “Interwoven Realms” Nanette has created delicate stitched fibre sculptures, platters, vessels and ceramic objects inspired by the marine life, shells, sand patterns, shoreline rocks, sea rhythms, coastal ecologies and familiar beach landscapes. Each stitched shell or vessel is a created realm, appearing to be somewhere between the real world and a reimagined natural world. Nanette invites an encounter with nature or place; to listen, feel and discover new realms and imagine possibilities. It’s a circle of communication between artist, the work and the audience.

Her work brings together threads, natural fibres, stitch and freehand machine embroidery. Nanette creates “stitch drawings” which when wet are moulded over objects to create unique sculptural forms such as shells, bowls and small organic vessels. For the first time Nanette has created multi layered digital photographs; to reimagine familiar favourite beaches and to invite wonder at the unexpected new realms. Fibre, stitch drawing, ceramics and other media are interwoven together with inspiration from nature, creating new and intriguing realms.

Nanette Balchin is a multidisciplinary collage and fibre artist working from her studio in the coastal community of Yeppoon, Central Queensland. Nanette has exhibited for over 20 years in touring, group and collaborative shows across Regional Qld, in Brisbane and Port Fairy and in her home communities of Yeppoon and Rockhampton. She is well known locally for her active involvement in the arts, including Latitude 23 Arts group, Capricornia Printmakers, Wrapt in Rocky, The Mill Gallery and many community arts initiatives.
